The heart of Pushkar is the sacred lake framed by white temples and ghats where locals and pilgrims pay their respects. Local priests offer small pujas (worship ceremonies), give blessings, and tie red threads (kalava) around your wrist, a symbol of protection and connection with the divine. Every evening, an atmospheric aarti (fire ceremony with mantras) takes place here. Approach one of the ghats for a spiritual experience, though be prepared: sometimes the priests can be pushy, so say "No, thank you" calmly if you prefer not to participate.

By tradition the lake appeared where a lotus petal fell from the hands of Brahma, the creator. That is why Pushkar is one of the very few places in the world dedicated to Brahma himself, and its lake one of the most sacred bodies of water in India.
