Mahatma Phule Mandai
Pune's produce market trades inside a Gothic stone hall built between 1882 and 1886 as Lord Reay Market and renamed in 1938 after the reformer Jyotirao Phule. Eight wings radiate from an eighty-foot octagonal tower, and under them hundreds of vegetable, fruit and flower stalls have been trading for nearly 140 years. Dawn is when it is fullest, and during Ganeshotsav, the city's Ganesha festival, the Mandai Ganpati is among the most honoured in the city. Free to wander, worth keeping your bag close in the crush, and the ironwork and stone inside are a gift to anyone with a camera.
