Ooty Racecourse
A racetrack in the middle of a hill town reads as an oddity until you remember what Ooty was built for. Racing under Turf Club rules started at Hobart Park in 1894, and the present course of just over a mile was laid out between 1896 and 1899. The Madras Race Club still runs a summer season from April to June, when the stands fill with holiday crowds and the whole thing turns into a working relic of colonial-era Ooty summers. Out of season the oval lies empty and green, easy to take in from the roads that ring it.
