Bird · Treron phoenicopterus

Yellow-footed green pigeon

हरियल (hariyal)

IUCN LC · Least concern

A stocky olive-green pigeon with yellow legs that feeds on figs high in the canopy and is said never to set foot on bare ground.

How to recognise it

Green against green — easiest found by the falling fig pulp and the mellow, whistled, almost human song from a banyan crown.

Where to see it

Mumbai

The state bird of Maharashtra, hariyal. It feeds almost entirely on figs, so Mumbai's old banyans and peepals, in Rani Baug above all, are where it is found.

Sanjay Gandhi National Park (often) · Rani Baug (often) · Hanging Gardens & Kamala Nehru Park (in season)

Pune

The state bird of Maharashtra, where it is called hariyal. The belief that it avoids the ground is folklore, but it does spend nearly all its time in trees.

Empress Botanical Garden (often) · Vetal Tekdi (in season) · Saras Baug (in season)
