Mammal · Panthera tigris tigris

Bengal tiger

IUCN EN · EndangeredProtected under Indian law · I

Even where tigers are numerous, the animal is not easy to see: most visitors do not, and that is normal.

👀 How to recognise it

Far more often heard about than seen: alarm calls from chital, langur and sambar mean a predator is moving. Pug marks in the dust of the track are the usual evidence.

Protection

Schedule I, Wildlife (Protection) Act 1972

Where to see it

Mysore

Bandipur is part of the Nilgiri landscape that holds one of the largest tiger populations anywhere. It was one of the first nine reserves created under Project Tiger in 1973, built on what had been the Mysore maharaja's hunting preserve.
