Flower · Cytisus scoparius

Scotch broom

IUCN LC · Least concern

A shrub with bright yellow pea flowers that looks charming but is a serious invader: once brought in, it takes over open grassland.

How to recognise it

Dense green broom-like stems, almost leafless, covered in yellow flowers in the cool months. Where it has established, native grass is simply gone.

Protection

Recognised invasive in the Nilgiris

Where to see it

Ooty & Coonoor

Its local Tamil name refers to Kotagiri, where it is most conspicuous. Wherever it establishes it has wiped out the indigenous grasses, which hits the Nilgiri pipit and other ground-nesting birds directly. It was brought to the Nilgiris and has since taken over open downs, one of the worst things to happen to their grassland.
