Bird · Galloperdix lunulata

Painted spurfowl

IUCN LC · Least concern

A shy ground bird of rocky scrub, the male finely spotted with white on black and glossed dark green, with a red bill and red legs carrying spurs.

How to recognise it

Usually a shape sprinting between boulders. At Daroji and around the ruins it sometimes sits openly on rock in the early morning before the heat.

Where to see it

Hampi

It is one of the few birds essentially confined to India's dry boulder country, which makes the Hampi-Daroji landscape one of the better places in the world to look for it.
