Mango
आम (aam)
A dense dark evergreen that shades courtyards, temple tanks and village roads, and flowers with a cloud of tiny cream blossom before the hot season.
How to recognise it
Long narrow leathery leaves, coppery red when new, and a crown so dense it is dark underneath at noon.
Where to see it
Chandigarh
The state tree of Chandigarh, and the tree the Mughal garden at Pinjore was laid out around: the mango terraces there predate the modern city by three centuries.
