Royal Opera House

← Mumbai

AreaGirgaon / Charni Road

India's only surviving opera house opened in 1911, in time for the visit of George V, then spent decades sliding towards ruin. A restoration between 2008 and 2016 brought back the chandeliers, the gilded tiers and the Minton floors, and won a UNESCO Asia-Pacific conservation award in 2017. Lata Mangeshkar sang on this stage and Prithviraj Kapoor acted on it; today the 575-seat baroque hall runs plays, concerts and screenings. Buying a ticket to whatever is on remains the simplest way to see the inside.

The only opera house left in India, and the interior justifies any ticket on the bill
