Krishnanagar Rajbari

← Mayapur

AreaKrishnanagar (~25 km)

The rajbari (the seat of the local ruling family) of Maharaja Krishnachandra Roy, who held Nadia from 1728 to 1782, gave Krishnanagar its name and paid for a whole generation of Bengali poets, potters and musicians. Much of the 18th-century complex has weathered into part-ruin, but the coloured gateway and the carved inner walls hold, and in the central courtyard the Durga temple still runs the family puja begun by his great-grandfather Rudra Roy. Busiest at Jagaddhatri Puja in November, the festival Krishnachandra started. Some wings are lived in, so ask before walking through.

The court that bankrolled Nadia's arts, faded now but still keeping its 300-year-old Durga puja
