What to buy in Mathura

← Mathura

Mathura sells what pilgrims need, and that is exactly what makes a good souvenir: peda, the city's own milk sweet, from shops that have made it for generations; poshak and mukut, the dress and crown for a household Krishna; tulsi and rudraksha prayer beads; brass and marble images. Almost all of it is sold in the lanes between Holi Gate and Vishram Ghat.

What to buy

Peda

Khoya (milk cooked slowly down to a solid) rolled with cardamom: Mathura's own sweet, darker, grainier and drier than the Vrindavan version. Sold by weight in boxes that travel well for a few days. For eating the same day ask for fresh peda; for the journey home, the harder pakka peda keeps longer.

Poshak and mukut for a home shrine

Hand-stitched dresses and crowns for a household image of Krishna. Thakur Ji ki Poshak (deity dress) is a notified district product of Mathura, so the old-city stalls are the honest place to buy it.

Malas and puja things

Tulsi (holy basil) and rudraksha prayer beads, brass puja lamps, clay diyas, saffron dhotis and printed Krishna images.

Brass and marble Krishnas

Images in every size, alongside bangles, embroidered cloth and devotional recordings.

Where to buy

Holi Gate, Tilak Dwar and Chowk Bazaar: the old market ring between Holi Gate, the Dwarkadhish Temple and Vishram Ghat is where Mathura actually shops. The lanes are about 2 metres wide and full of motorcycles, so walk slowly; evenings are when the whole street is awake.

For peda: the district administration lists Brijwasi first among Mathura's peda shops; its flagship counters are at Holi Gate and by the Krishna Janmabhoomi, with branches across town and in Govardhan. Gosai Pede Wale near Prayag Ghat, below the Janmabhoomi, traces its line to 1832 and is known for deep-roasted laal peda and long-keeping pakka peda. Raman Misthan Bhandar, two minutes from Mathura Junction, is the handy last stop before a train.

✅ How to shop

  • Bargain at the stalls — Prices in the old-city lanes are low and bargaining is expected, especially for brass and silver. Sweet shops sell peda by weight.
  • Bring small notes — Small notes make paying at the lane stalls easier.
  • Mind security near the Janmabhoomi — The Krishna Janmabhoomi complex is high-security, with restrictions on bags and cameras, so shop after your visit rather than before.
