Workshops in Kolkata

A morning in the Kumartuli idol workshops

Walk the narrow lanes of the potters' quarter while sculptors build goddesses out of straw, bamboo and river clay, and watch a single figure move from bound skeleton to painted face across the working year.

free · Workshops are active most of the year; the build-up is heaviest roughly June to October and peaks in the weeks before Durga Puja (September–October). Mornings are best for light and for finding artisans at work.

Patachitra day trip to Naya: painted scrolls that are sung

Sit in a painted village house while a Chitrakar unrolls a cloth scroll frame by frame and sings the story it carries, then mix earth and flower colours and paint a panel at the same bench.

free · Year-round. The village's own POT Maya scroll-painting festival is held in November; check dates before planning around it.

Chhau masks at Charida, and the dance they are made for

Watch a mask grow out of clay, paper and cloth on a workshop verandah in a village of mask-makers, then see one worn in a Purulia Chhau performance where the dancer leaps and spins without ever speaking.

free · Mask workshops work year-round, busiest before the spring Chaitra Parva. Performances cluster around Chaitra Parva (March–April) and the winter months; the Palash bloom in spring is the village's best season.

A textile workshop at Weavers Studio

A day with a Kolkata textile house: a two-hour hands-on workshop in kantha stitching, shibori resist-dyeing or block printing at its production unit, then its Ballygunge store and an afternoon among rare textiles in its archive and library.

Not published; quoted with the tailored itinerary · On dates arranged with the studio; the sample day runs 10:00–17:00. The archive is open 11:00–18:00 and closed on Sundays and public holidays.
