Magen David Synagogue

← Kolkata

AreaCanning Street / Burrabazar

Red brick and a steeple that reads more like a church from the street. The synagogue was built in 1884 by the Baghdadi Jewish community when Calcutta was their hub in Asia, and it is counted among the finest on the continent. Restoration brought it back in 2017, and in 2024 the 140-year-old tower clock started ticking again after a crowdfunded repair; inside there is chequered marble, chandeliers and stained glass. Entry usually means signing in with ID; Beth El Synagogue is on the same short walk.
