The main temple of Kolkata, dedicated to Kali, Goddess of Destruction and Transformation. The city's name comes from it (Kali-kshetra → Kolkata).

Kali is the dark fire of the universe, the dance of time in which all living things are born and die. Her skin is black as the abyss of space, where there is neither beginning nor end. She walks barefoot through the world with loose hair, fire in her eyes and her tongue sticking out, as if life itself has overflowed its banks. In her necklace are heads, but this is not a symbol of cruelty but a reminder: every ego, every illusion eventually falls at her feet.

She is terrible to those who cling to falsehood and beautiful to those ready to trust the truth. Kali destroys not people, but our fears, our pride, our limited forms. And this is why she is called not only formidable, but also Mother, capable of protecting, cleansing, and liberating. She is not only the end but also the beginning. She is the breath of change, the darkness from which light is born.

You can only understand her by feeling what is hidden in destruction: there is birth. For Kali is not only the end, but also the beginning.

During darshan, the gaze of Kali pierces to the bones. Energy strikes like an electric shock. Not fear, but something ancient, primordial. Like looking into the original darkness from which everything emerged.
