Belur Math
Headquarters of the Ramakrishna Mission and Vivekananda, a place where they literally built a temple in which a Christian cross, a Muslim dome, and Hindu ornaments coexist: a visual illustration of the idea "one truth — many paths." Located on the right bank of the Ganges, about 10 km north of the center.
Getting There: From Esplanade or Howrah via Uber/Ola you'll get there in 300–400 rupees and 35–50 minutes. There's also a cheap option: a local train from Howrah to Belur Math station (10 rupees, 15 minutes) plus a 5-minute walk.
Rules: Entrance is free, leave your shoes at the entrance, photography is not allowed in the main temple, and shoulders and knees must be covered.
Main Things to See (1.5 hours):
- Universal temple (very calm inside)
- Separate temple of Sri Ramakrishna
- Vivekananda's room with his bed and belongings
- Old museum on the second floor
- River bank and garden
Best Times: Early morning before 8–9 am or during evening arati (around 6 pm), when they sing and light lamps. Weekdays are almost empty; weekends and holidays are crowded. If you get hungry, there's a mission cafeteria on the premises with simple vegetarian food for 40–60 rupees.
