Galta Ji (Monkey Temple)

← Jaipur

AreaKhania-Balaji, ~10 km east of the centre

An old pilgrimage complex wedged into a narrow pass in the Aravalli hills, its pink sandstone pavilions stacked along the gorge above seven spring-fed kunds (sacred tanks) where pilgrims bathe; Galta Kund is held to be the holiest of them. The resident monkey troop gave the place its nickname and its rules: keep food out of sight and bags closed. Above the gorge, the Surya temple looks back over the whole of Jaipur, which is reason enough to time a visit for late afternoon. Dress modestly; small camera fees may apply.
