Bhangarh Fort
A whole seventeenth-century town stands empty at the edge of the Sariska Tiger Reserve: gates, lanes, temples, havelis (merchant mansions) and a palace on the slope above, with the hills closing in behind. Bhangarh is known across India for its haunted folklore, and the rule that grew out of it is real: the Archaeological Survey admits visitors only between sunrise and sunset, roughly 6 AM to 6 PM. It is a two to three hour drive from Jaipur and pairs naturally with the Chand Baori stepwell at Abhaneri. October to March is the comfortable season.
India's best-known ghost town: go by daylight, since the gates shut at sunset
