Bapu Bazaar

Bapu Bazaar runs between New Gate and Sanganeri Gate, in the heart of the walled old city, and it is where Jaipur shops for itself. Jaipuri juttis and leather goods, ready-made ethnic clothing, artificial jewellery, lac bangles and the quilted razai that Jaipur is known for.

Hand-printed fabric is Rajasthan's calling card and the other reason to come: the pattern is applied with wooden stamps, each colour needing its own block, and the recognisable styles are Sanganeri and Bagru, named for the villages south of the city where they are made.

What to buy: light shirts and tunics, scarves, saris, bedspreads and bedding. Quality varies a lot with the density of the cloth and the fastness of the dye, so it is worth checking both on the spot.
