Piran Kaliyar Sharif
Twenty-five kilometres from Haridwar, near Roorkee on the Upper Ganga Canal, stands the dargah (the shrine-tomb) of Alauddin Ali Ahmed 'Sabir' Kaliyari, the Chishti-Sabiri saint who died in 1291; the building went up under Ibrahim Lodhi. It is among the most revered Sufi sites in South Asia, honoured by Muslims and Hindus alike, and most people come to ask for healing. Evenings bring qawwali, the devotional singing of the tradition, and the annual Urs of Sabir Pak, dated by the lunar calendar, fills the whole village. Entry is free; cover your head and dress modestly.
