Sunrise on Anjanadri

Across the Tungabhadra rises the hill held to be Hanuman's birthplace: Anjana's hill, Anjanadri. You cross the river in a round coracle, then climb a long stair to a small temple with Hanuman cut into the rock. From the top the whole boulder country lies out below, and at sunrise the stone turns the colour it is famous for.

Set out in the dark to be up for first light; the climb takes about forty-five minutes.
