November–February: the season. Days of 29–33 °C, nights of 16–19 °C, and from December to February only about 2 mm of rain a month. January has the coolest nights, around 16 °C. This is the weather for long days on foot or by bicycle between the monument groups.
March–May: the heat. Average highs climb from 36 °C in March to 38 °C in April and May, nights stay at 22–24 °C, and the sun on open stone makes it feel hotter. May brings the first storms, about 67 mm. See the ruins in the early morning and late afternoon and rest in between.
June–September: the monsoon. Highs drop to 30–33 °C, humidity rises to about 80%, and rain grows from 86 mm in June to 151 mm in September, falling on five to seven days a month. This is a dry region even in the rains: the whole year brings only about 680 mm.
October: the turn. Still 96 mm of rain over about five days, with days of 30 °C and nights of 21 °C. By November the rain is down to 26 mm.
Best time to visit Hampi
November to February is the best window, with October and March as good shoulder months. April to June is the time to avoid: the heat on open stone is the real problem here, not the rain. July to September is possible if you accept showers and a river that can shut the crossings. Hampi Utsav, the state festival of concerts and lights in the ruins (3–5 November 2026, expected), is now held in November, in dry, comfortable weather. More on choosing dates in Best time to visit Hampi.
The river in the monsoon
When the Tungabhadra rises, the boats to Virupapur Gaddi and Anegundi stop and coracle rides are cancelled; the far bank is then a 25 km detour over the Anegundi bridge, approx. ₹500–800 by tuk-tuk. Big releases from the dam upstream can flood the riverside monuments, as in August 2019, when all 33 gates were opened; the dam has also lost a crest gate, which was washed away during a monsoon. If you come between June and October, keep a spare day and check the river before planning the far bank.
What to pack
Most of the year the sun matters more than the rain.
- Sun protection and water — The Royal Centre has little shade; a hat and a full bottle matter in every month.
- A light layer — For December–January mornings and sunrise climbs, when it is 16–17 °C.
- Clothes that cover — Shoulders and knees are covered at the Virupaksha Temple, and loose covering clothes are also the best defence against the sun. See temple dress code.
- An umbrella — For June to October.
