Where is Hampi, and what is it famous for
Hampi is a village in the Vijayanagara district of Karnataka, South India, on the south bank of the Tungabhadra river, 13 km from the town of Hosapete. It is famous as the ruined capital of the Vijayanagara empire: more than 1,600 surviving monuments scattered across a landscape of granite boulders, listed by UNESCO as the Group of Monuments at Hampi since 1986. About 3,000 people live in the village today.
Hampi is in the state of Karnataka (South India).
The ghost capital of the Vijayanagara empire, strewn across a boulder moonscape on the Tungabhadra: temples, bazaars and a famous stone chariot left mid-sentence five centuries ago. One of India's most spectacular ruins, with boulder-top sunsets over the whole vanished city.
Where exactly Hampi is
Hampi lies in the dry interior of north-central Karnataka, far from the coast and from the state's better-known south: it is not near Mysuru, a question people often ask. The nearest town and railhead is Hosapete (Hospet), 13 km southwest; the district, carved out of Ballari, is named after the empire itself. Across the river is Anegundi, in Koppal district, the older settlement that came before the capital.
The landscape explains a lot. Granite tors and balanced boulders run to the horizon, banana groves and paddy fill the gaps, and the Tungabhadra cuts through it all. Domingo Paes, a Portuguese traveller who saw the city around 1520, wrote that what he saw from a hilltop seemed "as large as Rome".
Facts about Hampi
What the place is known for, from the empire to the boulders.
229 years as an imperial capital
Vijayanagara made Hampi its capital in 1336. After the Battle of Talikota in 1565 the city was sacked by an alliance of Deccan sultanates and never recovered. Around 1500 it is estimated to have been one of the largest cities in the world, second only to Beijing by some estimates.
A UNESCO site since 1986
More than 1,600 surviving remains are spread over about 4,190 hectares: temples, palaces, baths, markets, gates and water works. The site was on the List of World Heritage in Danger from 1999 to 2006.
A temple that never stopped
In a city of ruins, the Virupaksha Temple has been in worship continuously since about the seventh century, through the rise of the empire and its sack. Its god is Shiva as Pampapati, husband of the river goddess Pampa, and the name Hampi comes from Pampa.
The Ramayana's monkey kingdom
Local tradition places Kishkindha, the kingdom of the monkey kings in the Ramayana, around Hampi and Anegundi. Anjanadri hill across the river is held to be Hanuman's birthplace, a claim Tirumala in Andhra Pradesh also makes.
The chariot on the ₹50 note
The Stone Chariot at the Vittala Temple appears on the fifty-rupee note. Despite the legend, it is not carved from one rock: it is assembled from granite blocks fitted so tightly the joints barely show.
Musical pillars and a giant Narasimha
The Vittala pillars ring when struck (tapping is now forbidden to protect them). The Lakshmi Narasimha monolith, 6.7 m tall and cut from one boulder in 1528, is the largest sculpture on the site.
Boulders, bears and banana fibre
Hampi's granite is one of the best-known bouldering areas in Asia. Daroji, about 15 km away, was the first sanctuary in Asia created for sloth bears. Across the river, village women in Anegundi turn banana-plantation waste into bags and baskets.
Seeing it for yourself
The museum in Kamalapura has a large scale model of the whole site, and an hour there turns the scattered ruins into a map you can carry in your head. Start there, then use the Hampi itinerary and the best time to visit: from March the heat on bare stone decides the day.
