Shri Shantadurga Temple, Kavlem (Ponda, Goa)
Shri Shantadurga Temple in Kavlem, Ponda, is the largest temple in Ponda, 33 km from Panaji. It honours Shantadurga, the form of Durga who stopped a war between Vishnu and Shiva. Ponda's largest temple honours Shantadurga, the goddess who by tradition stood between Vishnu and Shiva and made peace between them. The deity was carried here from Keloshi after 1566, and the complex you see went up between 1713 and 1738 under Maratha patronage: maroon and white walls, tiled roofs stacked like a pagoda, and a six-storey deepstambha (the tower of lamps lit on festival nights), among the most photographed objects in the state. Shoes come off at the steps, shoulders and knees stay covered. About 30 km from Panjim.

Dress code
In July 2022 the temple committee announced, according to The Goan, that people in shorts, mini-skirts, sleeveless tops, low-waist jeans and short T-shirts will not be allowed into the temple. Security staff offer shawls provided by the committee to visitors who arrive dressed that way. Shoes come off at the steps, and shoulders and knees should be covered.
The goddess and the temple's history
By tradition Vishnu and Shiva once fought a war that distressed the whole world. Brahma asked the goddess Adimaya Durga to intervene; she took Shiva by one hand and Vishnu by the other and made peace. That form is Shantadurga, from shanti, peace. In the sanctum her four-armed murti stands with small six-inch images of Vishnu and Shiva on either side.
The goddess was first worshipped at Keloshi, as Santeri. When Portuguese missionary pressure grew, her devotees carried the murti across the Zuari river by night to Kavlem, then under the Adil Shahi kingdom; Portuguese records place the move between 14 January and 29 November 1566. The present temple stood by 1713–1738: Naroram Mantri, a minister at the court of Shahu Chhatrapati, began building it around 1730, and Shahu gifted the village of Kavlem to the temple in 1739.
The original murti was stolen in 1898. The present one, carved by Laxman Krishnaji Gaitonde, was installed on 19 March 1902. Shantadurga and Shri Mangesh at Mangeshi are the two most revered family deities of the Gaud Saraswat Brahmin community.

Mangeshi, the other great temple of the community, is also in Ponda taluka, which makes the two a natural pair for one trip.
