Dona Paula Viewpoint, Goa
Dona Paula Viewpoint is the rocky headland and jetty about 7 km from central Panaji, near the point where the Mandovi and Zuari rivers flow into the Arabian Sea. It is an open-air spot with no published hours, best at sunset. The jetty was renovated and reopened in 2023; the famous statue on the rocks is a 1969 sculpture by Baroness Yrsa von Leistner, not a portrait of Dona Paula herself.
A promontory 7 km west of the city where the Mandovi river meets the Arabian Sea. The viewpoint is famous for its panoramic sweep of both coasts and the Verem ferry crossing below. Named after the Portuguese noblewoman Dona Paula de Menezes, whose legend (jilted love, suicide from these cliffs) is immortalised in a bronze statue facing the sea.
Go at sunset. Stalls nearby sell fresh coconut water and fried bhaji. Easy 10-min drive or ₹300 taxi from the city center.
What the viewpoint is
Dona Paula is a neighbourhood of Panaji at the tip of the headland between the two great estuaries of North Goa. The Mandovi and the Zuari meet and enter the Arabian Sea about a kilometre from the point, and the viewpoint takes in a wide sweep of both coasts and the water between them.
It is not a beach destination so much as a place to stand and look: a jetty over the rocks with a pergola on it. Stalls along the approach sell fresh coconut water and fried bhaji (vegetable fritters in chickpea batter).
Who was Dona Paula, and whose statue is it
The place is named after a real woman, Dona Paula de Souto Maior, who came to Goa in 1744 and died on 21 December 1782. Local memory remembers her as a woman of charity who helped the villagers, and after her death they renamed the area after her.
A more romantic story is told on the spot: a noblewoman, a forbidden love, a leap from these cliffs. It is a legend; the historical record remembers her for her charity instead.
The statue on the rocks near the jetty is not Dona Paula either. It was sculpted in 1969 by Baroness Yrsa von Leistner. Tourism accounts describe it as Mother India and Young India, one looking east and one looking west; another account says the Baroness modelled the figures on the philosopher Robert Knox and his wife.
The renovated jetty
The jetty was closed from November 2018 and reopened after a renovation under the Swadesh Darshan Coastal Circuit II project, inaugurated on 25 February 2023. According to the Government of Goa, the works added parking near NIO Circle (38 two-wheelers, 55 cars, 4 buses), railings, paving and lighting on the jetty, a refurbished pergola, and a tensile shelter with 56 vendor kiosks.
According to the press, the reopening brought a notified entry fee of ₹50 per adult for tourists, with Goa residents exempt; no official tariff or opening hours are published online, and the visit card above has none.
In July 2026 the state announced another round of works at the jetty under the Tourism Department, replacing the vendors' temporary stalls with permanent shops for 76 vendors. Check locally whether the jetty is open before planning around it.
How to reach and when to go
Dona Paula is about 7 km from central Panaji, roughly a 10-minute drive; a taxi from the city costs around ₹300. With your own scooter, use the new parking near NIO Circle and walk to the jetty.
Go at sunset. The headland faces the open sea.
Nearby: the National Institute of Oceanography has its campus at Dona Paula, and Raj Bhavan, the Governor's residence in the former Palácio do Cabo, is in Dona Paula too.
