Gangotri Temple (Gangotri Dham)
Arriving in Gangotri, you feel it at once: the energy here is entirely different. The air is cool and clear, as though the Lord himself had only just created these mountains and breathed life into them. The mind goes quiet, worries fade away, and you're filled with the sense that you're in the presence of something pure and transcendent.
The Gangotri Temple is situated at the source of the Ganga, a place of profound spiritual significance. The temple is believed to mark where the river begins her sacred journey. It is one of the four Char Dham shrines of Uttarakhand. According to Hindu tradition, this is where King Bhagirath performed penance and Ganga descended to earth, with Shiva receiving her in his matted locks; the stone of his penance, Bhagirath Shila, lies near the temple. Even when the inner sanctum is closed during winter months, the atmosphere remains alive: the river and the mountains surrounding it feel like the temple itself.
You can wander the temple grounds, touch its walls, and descend to the Ganga's ghat to let your fingers brush the ice-cold water. This is the freshly melted ice water, water that moments before was part of a snow-covered peak. You literally witness the streams being born, flowing down the slopes and gathering into currents.
