AreaBeside Gangotri Temple

A wide flat slab of rock a few steps from the Gangotri temple. By tradition this is where King Bhagirath sat in penance until Ganga agreed to come down to earth, the story on which the entire shrine rests. Pilgrims still perform small pujas, the everyday rituals of offering, on and around the stone, and it is the natural place to sit for a while and watch the Bhagirathi come out of the gorge. Shoes come off, nothing is charged. It can be reached only while the temple season runs, roughly 19 April to mid-November in 2026; the rest of the year the site lies under snow.
