Tula Sankramana at Talakaveri: the minute the Kaveri rises

A ridge full of people waiting for a river to be born in a stone tank

Tula Sankramana, called Kaveri Sankramana in Kodagu, is the day the Sun enters Libra, 17 or 18 October, when water wells up in the Brahma Kundike, the spring tank at the source of the Kaveri at Talakaveri. The moment, the Theerthodbhava, comes at a minute fixed by the temple's almanac and announced about a month ahead, and thousands wait for it on the Brahmagiri ridge. Next date: 18 October 2027 (expected).

The legend

In the Skanda Purana Shiva placed the Kaveri in the sage Agastya's water pot, and Ganesha, in the form of a crow, tipped it over and set the river free.

The Kaveri's source is honoured on the Brahmagiri hills of Kodagu: a spring feeds a small tank, the kundike, beside a little temple to the goddess Kaveramma.

🌞

Kaveri Sankramana, Changrandi to the Kodavas, is one of their three great festivals: as the sun enters Libra, the spring fills the larger holy tank.

Customs

The Theerthodbhava

Thousands of pilgrims wait for hours at the kundike for the minute, announced in advance, when water wells up from the spring.

Water to take home

Once the water has risen, pilgrims bathe in the larger tank and fill vessels to carry Kaveri water home across Kodagu.

Down the river

The same day is kept in pilgrim towns all along the Kaveri, starting with the river confluence at Bhagamandala.

Where to celebrate

Madikeri

At a minute fixed by the temple's almanac, water wells up in the small tank at the Kaveri's source on Brahmagiri, and thousands who have waited on the ridge fill steel pots to carry it home.

The Theerthodbhava: what happens and when

Talakaveri stands on the Brahmagiri hills at about 1,276 metres, according to Karnataka Tourism. A small shrine marks the spring, and the Brahma Kundike, the small tank fed by it, is where the water appears. On Tula Sankramana thousands of pilgrims fill the steps and terraces around it hours in advance. At the announced minute the water wells up and bubbles over; people then bathe in the larger tank beside the Kundike and fill vessels to carry the water home. Local people keep it as holy water, and Kodava homes and temples across the district hold a special puja on the day.

The minute is calculated each year and changes from year to year: in recent years it has come in the morning, in the early afternoon and in the evening. Pilgrims coming from Madikeri or further usually go up the evening before. The Talacauvery temple management fixes the date and the minute about a month ahead, and Kodagu district marks a local holiday.

Where the day is kept

Free to watch; come hours before the minute.

Talakaveri, the Brahma Kundike

The steps and terraces around the spring tank, and the larger tank where pilgrims bathe once the water has risen. Brahmagiri peak rises beside the temple.

Bhagamandala

About 8 km below, at the Triveni Sangama, where the Kaveri meets the Kannike and, by tradition, the subterranean Sujyoti, beside the Bhagandeshwara temple. The procession up to Talakaveri starts here, and KSRTC runs extra buses up the hill on the day.

The Kaveri Jatre

A fair that runs alongside the festival, with stalls, food and rides, according to Karnataka Tourism.

Down the river

The same day is kept at pilgrim towns along the Kaveri, including Srirangapatna near Mysuru.

At the Kundike

This is a pilgrimage at a working shrine, and the space around the tank is small.

  • Shoes off — Remove your footwear at the tank, as everyone around you does.
  • Clean vessels only — Only a clean vessel goes into the spring. If you want to take water home, bring a clean steel pot or bottle.
  • Dress modestly — Karnataka Tourism asks visitors to dress modestly and respectfully, especially at the holy Kundike.
  • Expect rain and cold — Mid-October is the tail of the monsoon on the ridge. The road from Madikeri can be hard going in heavy rain.

Getting there and where to stay

Kodagu has no railway and no airport, so the last stretch is always by road.

  1. Come via Mysuru or Mangaluru

Mysuru, about 120 km from Madikeri, is the usual route, with KSRTC buses or a car onwards. Mangaluru airport is about 135 km away and Kannur airport in Kerala about 120 km. If Mysuru Dasara falls in the same week, book the train to Mysuru as soon as sales open, 60 days ahead.

  2. Base yourself in Madikeri

Madikeri, the district town about 46–48 km from Talakaveri by hill road, has most of the rooms. Homestays around Bhagamandala are closer but fill first. Book about a month ahead.

  3. Go up the evening before

The road up from Bhagamandala is single-lane and starts to jam hours before the minute. One night nearby is the minimum; two help when the minute falls in the evening and the road is packed afterwards.
