Thyagaraja Aradhana in Thiruvaiyaru: five songs on the Kaveri bank
A river-bank morning when hundreds of musicians sing the same five songs together
Thyagaraja Aradhana is a five-day Carnatic music festival at the samadhi of the composer Thyagaraja (1767–1847) on the bank of the Kaveri in Thiruvaiyaru, near Thanjavur. It ends on the anniversary of his death, Pushya Bahula Panchami, when musicians and listeners sing his five Pancharatna kritis together. Next dates: 22–26 January 2027 (expected). Everything is free, and the best base is Thanjavur, about 12 km away.
The Sri Thyagabrahma Mahotsava Sabha announces the dates about five weeks ahead at the festival-pole ceremony; the Thanjavur collector declares a local holiday for the last day.
The legend
Tyagaraja (1767–1847) is one of the great composers of Carnatic music; most of his songs are addressed to Rama.
He spent most of his life in Thiruvaiyaru and was laid to rest on the bank of the Kaveri. The Aradhana is held at his samadhi on the day he died.
The singer Bangalore Nagarathnamma restored the neglected tomb and built a memorial temple over it, consecrated in 1921.
Customs
Five gems
On the main morning musicians gathered at the samadhi sing five of Tyagaraja's songs together, the Pancharatna Kritis.
Where to celebrate
Thiruvaiyaru
Five days of free concerts at Thyagaraja's samadhi on the Kaveri bank end on the last morning, when hundreds of musicians and listeners sing his five Pancharatna kritis together.
How the five days run
The festival is held in a pandal beside the samadhi: an awning open on all sides, with no chairs, where everyone sits on the sand. Concerts go on from morning to late night on the middle days, about 9 am to 11 pm in a recent edition, and begin in the evening on the opening day.
The last morning is the reason most people come. It starts with the Unchavritti bhajan, a singing procession from Thyagaraja's house on Thirumanjana Veedhi to the samadhi, in memory of the saint's life on alms. Then, at about 9 to 10 am, the musicians gathered at the samadhi sing the five Pancharatna kritis in chorus, and the same day the saint's image at the samadhi is bathed in an abhishekam (ritual bathing). On the last day come before 8 am if you want to sit near the stage.
The five Pancharatna kritis
Pancharatna means "five gems". All five are set to Adi tala; the first is in Sanskrit, the other four in Telugu.
| Jagadananda Karaka | Raga Nata, Sanskrit |
| Duduku Gala | Raga Gowla, Telugu |
| Sadhinchene | Raga Arabhi, Telugu |
| Kanakana Ruchira | Raga Varali, Telugu |
| Endaro Mahanubhavulu | Raga Sri, Telugu |
How the dates are set
The Aradhana follows the lunar calendar, not a fixed date: it ends on Pushya Bahula Panchami, the fifth day of the waning moon in the month of Pushya, which usually falls between early January and early February. The Sri Thyagabrahma Mahotsava Sabha, which runs the festival, announces the dates about five weeks ahead at the festival-pole ceremony, and the Thanjavur district collector declares a local holiday for the last day. In some years the Aradhana overlaps Pongal in mid-January, and then transport across Tamil Nadu is much harder to book.
Where to stay and how to plan
Thiruvaiyaru is a small town with very few rooms, so plan around Thanjavur.
- Stay in Thanjavur
Book about a month ahead; Thanjavur is about 12 km away. Town buses and taxis cover the distance in well under an hour.
- Arrive the night before
One night before the last morning is enough for the Pancharatna; two let you hear an evening of concerts on the eve as well.
- Leave before dawn on the last day
The crowd on the sand fills early. Come before 8 am for a place near the stage.
- Book trains early in Pongal years
Book long-distance trains and buses about a month ahead, or as soon as sales open 60 days ahead when the festival overlaps Pongal.
Combine it with
The Aradhana comes soon after the Chennai Music Season of December and January. In the same part of Tamil Nadu are the Azhi Ther chariot festival in Thiruvarur and the Natyanjali dance festival in Chidambaram. Tiruchirappalli is the other practical base for the trip.
