Vaikunta Ekadasi at Srirangam: the gate of heaven opens before dawn

In the dark before dawn, the gate to heaven opens for its ten days of the year

Vaikunta Ekadasi, the eleventh lunar day of the bright half of the Tamil month of Margazhi, is the holiest ekadashi of the year for Vaishnavas. At Srirangam, the island temple town of Tiruchirappalli (Trichy), it is the centre of a 21-day festival: before dawn the northern Paramapada Vasal, the gate of heaven, opens, Ranganatha is carried through it, and the crowd follows. Festival: 10–30 December 2026 (expected); Vaikunta Ekadasi itself: 20 December 2026 (expected).

The legend

Legend says Rama, after defeating Ravana, gave the image of Ranganatha to Vibhishana. On the way to Lanka it refused to leave the island of Srirangam.

🌌

Vaikunta Ekadasi is the holiest ekadashi for Vaishnavas. The temple is called Bhooloka Vaikuntam, heaven on earth.

🗓️

The Margazhi festival runs twenty days: ten days of Pagal Pathu and ten nights of Ra Pathu. The ekadashi is the first day of Ra Pathu.

Customs

The gate of heaven

On the morning of the ekadashi Ranganatha is carried through the Paramapada Vasal, the gate of heaven, to the thousand-pillared hall; the gate opens only in the festival.

Araiyar Sevai

The araiyars, hereditary temple singers, recite and enact the 4,000 verses of the Alvars, a tradition begun by Nathamuni in the 10th century.

Nammalvar's release

On the last day priests enact the poet Nammalvar reaching liberation, and someone from the crowd asks Vishnu to give him back to the people.

Where to celebrate

Tiruchirappalli

At the climax of Srirangam's 21-day Vaikunta Ekadasi festival, the northern Paramapada Vasal opens before dawn, Ranganatha is carried through it, and hundreds of thousands follow.

Pagal Pathu, Ra Pathu and the gate

The Margazhi festival opens with Thirunedunthandagam on the eve of the first day and then runs in two halves. Pagal Pathu, the ten days, has the processional deity Namperumal (the festival form of Ranganatha) brought out by day; Ra Pathu, the ten nights, has the processions after dark. Each day the araiyars, hereditary temple singers, recite and enact the 4,000 verses of the Alvar poet-saints, the Nalayira Divya Prabandham. This tradition, the Araiyar Sevai, goes back to Nathamuni in the 10th century.

Vaikunta Ekadasi is the first day of Ra Pathu. In the dark before dawn the Paramapada Vasal on the north side is opened, at an hour set by the Dhanu lagna (an astrological moment) that the temple announces each year. Ranganatha passes through first and is taken to the thousand-pillared hall, a Vijayanagara-era granite hall, and then the queue walks through the gate. Devotees believe that whoever passes through it reaches Vaikuntha, Vishnu's heaven, after death.

The gate stays shut for the rest of the year and opens only during the ten days of Ra Pathu. The festival closes with Nammalvar Moksham: priests enact the poet Nammalvar reaching liberation, and a devotee from the crowd asks Vishnu to give him back to the people.

The temple behind the gate

Srirangam stands on an island between the Kaveri and the Kollidam. The Ranganathaswamy temple and its town cover about 63 hectares (155 acres) within seven concentric enclosures, with 81 shrines and 21 gopurams; the outer rajagopuram, about 73 metres tall, was completed only in 1987 on a base begun around 1500. It is counted first among the 108 Divya Desams, the shrines of Vishnu praised by the Alvars, and it is the largest functioning religious complex in the world. During the festival the temple is called Bhooloka Vaikuntam, heaven on earth, and the 21 days draw about a million visitors.

Tradition links Srirangam to Srivilliputhur too: Andal, the poet-saint whose birthday is Aadi Pooram, is believed to have married Ranganatha and merged with his image here.

Planning the night of the opening

The temple publishes the full programme when the festival opens, and the Tiruchirappalli collector declares a local holiday for Vaikunta Ekadasi. The festival falls in the Christmas and New Year travel season, so book early.

  1. Stay in Trichy

Trichy has far more hotels than Srirangam, where the choice is temple lodgings and small guesthouses. Book about six weeks ahead.

  2. Take trains as soon as booking opens

Indian Railways opens reservations about 60 days ahead; for this festival use the first days of that window.

  3. Queue from the afternoon before

For the pre-dawn opening, join the free queue the previous afternoon; sleeping in the queue is normal. Srirangam station and the island's roads are a short ride from Trichy, but on the night of the opening the last stretch is on foot.

  4. Or come on a later day

On most other days of Ra Pathu the gate is open in the afternoon and evening, at hours given in the temple programme, with a fraction of the crowd. Pagal Pathu processions by day and Ra Pathu processions by night are free to watch.

Dress code and etiquette

Srirangam is a working temple, and on the night of the opening it draws an enormous crowd.

  • What to wear — Men in veshti (a white wrap) or trousers; women in a saree, salwar or long skirt. Shoes come off at the fourth enclosure wall.
  • Who can go where — The outer enclosures, with shops and houses, are open to everyone. The innermost sanctum is for Hindus.
  • In the queue — Follow the police and temple volunteers, keep water with you, and agree a meeting point outside the walls. The UK Foreign Office notes that stampedes have occurred at large religious gatherings in India; see is India safe.
