Shaheedi Jor Mela at Fatehgarh Sahib: remembering the younger Sahibzade

Ballads sung through a cold December night for two young martyrs

Shaheedi Jor Mela, also called Shaheedi Sabha, is the three-day congregation at Gurdwara Fatehgarh Sahib in Punjab that honours the martyrdom of Sahibzada Zorawar Singh and Sahibzada Fateh Singh, the youngest sons of Guru Gobind Singh, and their grandmother Mata Gujri. It is held on 11 to 13 Poh, usually around 25 to 27 December; next dates: 26–28 December 2026 (expected). Visitors of any faith are welcome, as in any gurdwara.

The Punjab holiday list, issued in December of the previous year, and the SGPC calendar fix the days; the Fatehgarh Sahib district administration confirms the programme in December.

The legend

On a winter night Guru Gobind Singh's family leaves besieged Anandpur. At the Sarsa crossing his mother and two youngest sons are separated from the rest.

🗼

They are handed over to the rulers of Sirhind, and Mata Gujri and the boys are held in the Thanda Burj, the fort's Cold Tower.

✊

Zorawar Singh is nine, Fateh Singh seven. They are offered riches to give up their faith, refuse, and are martyred.

🪙

Mata Gujri dies the same day. Tradition says Todar Mal covered the ground with gold coins set on edge to buy a place for their cremation.

Gurdwara Fatehgarh Sahib stands here, and every December hundreds of thousands come for three days to honour the younger Sahibzade.

People pray at Fatehgarh Sahib, at Jyoti Sarup where the cremation took place, and at the gurdwara of the Thanda Burj.

Moti Ram's memory

Nearby is a gurdwara for Moti Ram Mehra, who for three nights secretly brought milk to the prisoners in the tower.

True or myth

Shaheedi Jor Mela is a festive fair.

❌ Myth. Despite the word mela, it is a commemoration: the first day is purely religious, and the history is told in ballads.

Todar Mal, who bought the land for the cremation, was a Jain.

✅ True. He was a Svetambara Jain from Sirhind, and a congregation hall at Fatehgarh Sahib is named after him.

The town of Fatehgarh is named after the younger brother.

✅ True. The site was named Fatehgarh after seven-year-old Fateh Singh.

What the mela remembers

Guru Gobind Singh, the tenth Sikh Guru, left the besieged fort of Anandpur on a winter night. At the crossing of the Sirsa river his mother, Mata Gujri, and his two youngest sons, Sahibzada Zorawar Singh and Sahibzada Fateh Singh, were separated from the rest of the family. According to the district's account, the family's cook Gangu betrayed them to Wazir Khan, the faujdar (governor) of Sirhind, who held them in the Thanda Burj, the Cold Tower of his fort. The boys, nine and seven years old, refused to give up their faith and were bricked alive in a wall; Mata Gujri died on hearing of it. Sources differ on the year: the district administration gives 1704, while Wikipedia and other accounts give December 1705.

The town was later named Fatehgarh after the younger brother, and the district created in 1992 carries the same name. The present Gurdwara Fatehgarh Sahib was built over the site in the 1840s; beneath it, Bhora Sahib marks the place of the wall. Behind the main building, the Diwan Todar Mal hall remembers the man who, by tradition, bought the cremation ground with gold coins. Sikhs also remember Nawab Sher Muhammad Khan of Malerkotla, who had fought the Guru yet refused to take part in harming the children.

How the three days run

The mela is held on 11 to 13 Poh in the Sikh calendar, which usually falls around 25 to 27 December. The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC), which manages the gurdwara, holds diwans in which preachers, ragis (hymn singers) and dhadi groups, ballad singers with the small dhadd drum and sarangi, retell Sikh history to traditional music. Pilgrims pray at Gurdwara Fatehgarh Sahib, at the Thanda Burj gurdwara and at Gurdwara Jyoti Sarup, about 1.5 km away on the Sirhind–Chandigarh road, where the cremation took place.

Day 1 is the quietest and most purely religious. Day 3 brings the procession. Along the approach roads, nearby villages run langar, the free communal meal, cooking in open kitchens for the arriving sangat (congregation); it is offered to everyone.

Despite the word mela, this is a commemoration, and the mood is sober.

Etiquette and crowds

Several hundred thousand people come over the three days.

  • Cover your head, shoes off — As in every gurdwara: head covered (a scarf or handkerchief is enough), shoes left at the counter, modest dress.
  • Accept langar as it is offered — Sit where the sevadars (volunteers) seat you and take what is served; it is given freely to all.
  • Keep the tone — It is a day of mourning and remembrance. Keep voices low near the shrines and photograph with restraint.
  • In the crowd — The UK Foreign Office notes that stampedes have occurred at large religious gatherings in India and advises care with possessions in crowds. Agree a meeting point and follow police instructions.

Getting there

Fatehgarh Sahib is about 42 km west of Chandigarh and about 250 km from Delhi. National Highway 1 passes through the district at Sirhind, and buses on the Delhi–Amritsar route stop there; there are also regular buses from Chandigarh, Patiala and Ropar. By rail, Sirhind Junction on the Delhi–Amritsar line is the main stop, and there is a Fatehgarh Sahib station on the Sirhind–Nangal line. The nearest airport is Chandigarh (Mohali) international airport, about 50 km away.

Chandigarh is the easy base for a day visit; its own gurdwaras are a good introduction to gurdwara customs. Late December nights in Punjab are cold, and much of the mela is outdoors.
