Rann Utsav: a winter on the white salt of Kutch

A tent city on a sea of white salt under the full moon

Rann Utsav is not one day but a winter season on the White Rann of Kutch in western Gujarat: a tent city near the village of Dhordo, folk music and dance every evening, and trips onto the salt at sunset and sunrise. This season’s Tent City runs 1 November 2026 – 7 March 2027 (expected). The nights to aim for are around the full moon, when the salt glows silver to the horizon; you do not need a Tent City booking to see the Rann, only the government entry permit.

A months-long festival of culture and craft on the white salt desert of Kutch

Gujarat Tourism and the tent-city operator announce each season's dates in the summer (in July in 2026).

The legend

Tens of millions of years ago a shallow sea lay here, and when the land rose it became a lake.

Today, every monsoon, most of the Rann goes under water, about half a metre deep.

Over the long dry season the water evaporates and the salt stays behind: a white plain of more than 26,000 square kilometres.

Meaning

Dhordo

The village beside the tent city was named a Best Tourism Village by the UN World Tourism Organization in 2023.

Dholavira

A Harappan city with huge reservoirs, where water was harvested and stored as early as the 3rd millennium BCE; on UNESCO's list since 2021.

Customs

Mirror embroidery

Kutch embroidery sparkles with tiny mirrors sewn over the patterns, and each community has its own style.

Rogan

Thick oil paint is drawn off a stylus in thread-fine strands and laid down freehand, with no stencil.

A night on the salt

On full-moon nights people walk out onto the salt, and the white plain glows silver to the horizon.

True or myth

Rogan paint is made by boiling castor oil for about two days.

✅ True. The oil is boiled for about two days and mixed with dyes, and five colours are all the painting needs.

British archaeologists discovered the Harappan city of Dholavira.

❌ Myth. In the early 1960s a local man, Shambhudan Gadhvi, found it and pressed the government to take notice.

The Indian wild ass lives only in the Rann of Kutch.

✅ True. This wild ass lives nowhere else, and in the rains it waits out the floods on dry islands called bets.

Worth the trip

A four-month tent city on the edge of the white salt, and the nights to aim for are the full-moon ones, when the Rann glows silver all the way to the horizon.

What the festival is

Every monsoon most of the Rann goes under shallow water; over the dry season it evaporates and leaves a white salt plain of more than 26,000 square kilometres. Gujarat Tourism built a festival around it. At its centre is Rann Utsav – The Tent City at Dhordo, the official tented stay at the edge of the White Rann, run by Evoke Experiences for Gujarat Tourism: folk music and dance every evening, craft stalls, and fixed trips out to the salt.

The festival is also about Kutch crafts: mirror embroidery, bandhani tie-dye, ajrak block printing and Rogan painting, sold by the makers in the villages around. Dhordo itself, known for its mud craft, Mutwa embroidery and Banni hospitality, was named one of the UN World Tourism Organization’s Best Tourism Villages in 2023.

When to go: the full moon

The season runs through the winter, but the full-moon nights are the reason most people come. Reach Dhordo the day before the full moon: on the eve the moon is already up over the salt at sunset, and the next night is brighter still. The Tent City operator calls its full-moon windows the most sought-after nights of the season, so book those about three months ahead.

Days are bright and the white salt is intensely reflective: sunglasses and sun protection. Nights in the desert can be cold, so pack a warm layer.

Permit and getting there

Bhuj is the gateway: fly or take the train there, then go on about 80 km to Dhordo.

  1. Get the White Rann permit

The Rann is a border area. The Gujarat government permit is checked at the Bhirandiyara checkpost. Indian nationals can buy it online in advance (the main traveller uploads an ID); the online permit is marked as for Indian nationals only, so foreign visitors should arrange it at the checkpost and carry their passport and visa. It costs approximately ₹100 per person over 12 and ₹50 for children aged 6–12, plus a small extra charge; under-fives go free, and there is no charge for vehicles.

  2. Book flights and trains early

There are only a few flights a day to Bhuj; train tickets go on sale 60 days ahead. Arriving two days before the full moon with a night in Bhuj works well.

  3. Bhuj to Dhordo

Tent City guests ride its free coaches from Bhuj railway station and Bhuj airport at fixed times through the day (timetable on the operator’s site). Day visitors drive out from Bhuj with the permit.

  4. At the Rann

From the gate, walk out to the watchtower and the sunset point, the same place the Tent City trips go; a light and sound show runs there.

Where to stay

Three ways to base yourself, from right on the salt to the town.

The Tent City, Dhordo

Around 400 tents for the whole season; packages include meals, the cultural evenings and the trips to the salt. By the operator’s terms, cancellation refunds 90% up to 30 days before arrival.

Banni villages

Homestays and bhunga (round mud hut) resorts between Bhuj and Dhordo: the middle way.

Bhuj

The base for the old town and the craft villages, with the Rann as a day trip on the permit.

Around Kutch

The Tent City programme and day trips from Bhuj cover these.

Kala Dungar

The highest point in Kutch, with a view across the Rann; paired with Gandhi Nu Gaam (Ludiya), a village of round painted mud houses rebuilt after the 2001 earthquake.

Dholavira

The Harappan city on Khadir Bet, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2021, about 105 km from Dhordo along the road across the Rann.

Bhuj and Ajrakhpur

The Swaminarayan temple and the Kutch Museum in town, and the ajrak block printers of Ajrakhpur outside it.

Good to know

Gujarat is a dry state: the UK Foreign Office lists it among the states where drinking, making or carrying alcohol is illegal.
