Ganesh Chaturthi in Goa
Ten days when Mumbai belongs to Ganesha
In Goa, Chovoth is a homecoming: families gather in ancestral houses under the matoli, a canopy of forest fruit, and on the second and fifth evenings carry their Ganesh to river, creek, sea or well.
Where to watch
Matoli markets: Ponda's Budhwar Peth and Panaji's Chavticho Bazaar at the Old GMC Complex, crowded in the days before Chaturthi with fruit, gourds and forest greens for the matoli canopy.
Cumbharjua, Marcel and St Estevan: villages known for giant Ganesh images; on the seventh day Cumbharjua holds the Sangod, boats joined into floats carrying scenes from mythology along the canal, watched from the banks and the bridge.
Rivers, creeks and beaches: the immersion processions on the second, fifth and seventh evenings, with drums and fireworks.
