Khan Market, Delhi: timings, metro and what to look for
Khan Market is a compact, upmarket shopping street in central New Delhi, a favourite of the expat and diplomatic community, with its own stop on the Violet Line. There are no official market-wide timings or weekly closing day: Delhi Tourism publishes none, and each shop and restaurant keeps its own hours, so check the place you are going to before a special trip.
A glamorous market in central Delhi with premium boutiques of local and international brands. But the real value of this place isn't the international labels; it's the local finds: designer clothing, home goods, souvenirs, and furnishings that carry on Indian traditions and craftsmanship. All in a compact format of cozy streets with cafes and bookshops.
A legend of Khan Market is Faqir Chand & Sons, Delhi's most famous bookstore. It opened in 1931 in Peshawar and moved here in 1951 after the Partition. The store has survived everything: changing eras, shopping centers, and Amazon. But the smell of old books and the soul you can't buy online still lingers here. Today the shop is run by the founder's great-grandson, 24-year-old Abhinav. The sign still reads "established in 1951," and it feels like little has changed since then: narrow aisles, the smell of paper, a small wooden desk. Everything invites you to linger. You can find rare editions here as well as provocative counterculture books. The store has become a symbol for a new generation searching for inspiration in the old.
The shelves hold books on AI too. Ironic: searching for answers about the future in a bookstore that still whispers the past.

How to get there
Metro: Khan Market station is on the Violet Line, which runs between Kashmere Gate and Raja Nahar Singh (Ballabhgarh). It opened on 3 October 2010; the exit at Gate 4 leads to the market.
The station is also about 0.8 km from Purana Qila and the Delhi Zoo, so the three combine easily in one outing.
What Khan Market is like
Khan Market was set up in 1951, after Partition, for refugees from the North-West Frontier Province, and is named after Khan Abdul Jabbar Khan (Dr Khan Sahib). Today it is a large U-shaped market: two parallel U's of shops with some extensions.
Delhi Tourism's list is a fair map of what you find: bookshops, upmarket boutiques, opticians, grocers, tailors, brand showrooms and lifestyle stores, plus a couple of boutiques for upmarket home furnishings. Across the road the shops deal mainly in lighting. Between them are cafes, restaurants, bakeries and street-food corners.
The value for a visitor is less the international labels than the local design: clothing, homeware and furnishings that carry on Indian crafts.
