What Janpath Market is

Janpath ("people's path") runs south from Connaught Place, and its market is a line of kiosks and small shops along the road rather than one building. Delhi Tourism describes it as a place for street shopping, with much of the clothing being export-surplus garments sold at low prices.

The market grew out of Delhi's post-1947 history: Delhi Tourism notes that the area was settled by refugees who came after Partition and by Tibetans who arrived after China's invasion of Tibet. Near Hotel Imperial there is a separate Tibetan Market with Tibetan curios and artefacts.

The India GO guide's verdict: touristy, but a likeable market, and the right stop for small, inexpensive gifts.

✅ What to buy at Janpath

  • Cotton clothing, much of it export surplus, at low prices
  • Costume jewellery and silver, including pieces set with semi-precious stones
  • Scarves and bags
  • Prayer beads and small souvenirs
  • At the Tibetan Market: silver jewellery, thangkas (Tibetan Buddhist scroll paintings) and brassware

    How to shop here

Delhi Tourism's own advice is blunt: shopping here takes two skills, telling the fake from the genuine and bargaining patiently. Treat the first price you hear as an opening offer.

A useful benchmark is across the road. The Central Cottage Industries Emporium, a government store, sells crafts at fixed prices, so a look there first tells you what a good shawl or piece of silver actually costs before you start haggling on the street. Since 2025 the press has reported sparse stock there, so the range may be limited.

    Timings and how to reach

There is no single official schedule for Janpath: kiosks and shops set their own hours, and the India GO database holds no opening times for the market. Delhi Tourism's page gives hours only for the Cottage Emporium across the road (10 am to 7 pm, all days). Plan for daytime and early evening, and do not count on every stall being open at the same time.

The market sits between Connaught Place and the Cottage Emporium. Janpath station on the Violet Line is next to the Emporium, and the walk up from there runs past the stalls.
