EntryFree

Yes, Delhi has also been touched by the Hare Krishna movement. ISKCON in Delhi is a beautiful, modern temple complex located not far from the Lotus Temple.

What's great:

- The atmosphere of kirtan. Especially if you attend the evening service: it's a powerful, almost transcendent experience. - The architecture of a classical Hindu temple: bright, elegant, with traditional ornaments and sculptural elements. - Inside there's an excellent vegetarian restaurant: you can have lunch or dinner there. - The temple has a bookstore and gift shop (as always with ISKCON, everything is top-notch).

If you've never been to a Hare Krishna temple in India, it's worth stopping by for an introduction.

ISKCON Delhi timings and aarti schedule

The temple's own site gives the hours as 4:30 am to 9 pm, every day. The sanctum, where the deities stand, closes at 1 pm after the midday offering and reopens at 4 pm; the complex itself stays open.

The day is built around a cycle of aartis (offerings of lamps, incense and song to the deities):

  • Mangala aarti: 4:30 am
  • Sringar aarti: about 7 to 7:15 am
  • Raj Bhog aarti: 12:30 pm
  • Dhup aarti: 4:15 pm
  • Sandhya aarti: about 6:30 to 7 pm
  • Shayana aarti: 8:30 pm

The temple notes that Mangala and Sandhya aarti shift by about half an hour between summer and winter, which is why its pages give slightly different times. Sandhya aarti is the most attended.

What to see at ISKCON Delhi

The temple was inaugurated on 5 April 1998 by Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. It is a working place of worship first, with a cultural centre and a restaurant around it.

The main temple hall

Three altars: Sri Sri Radha Parthasarathi (Krishna as Arjuna's charioteer, with Radha), Sri Sri Sita Rama Lakshmana Hanuman, and Sri Sri Gaura Nitai. During the evening aarti the hall fills with kirtan, call-and-response singing of the Hare Krishna mantra.

Glory of India Vedic Cultural Centre

A 375-seat auditorium and a multimedia museum about Vedic culture inside the complex. The temple site does not list its show times or price, so ask at the complex.

The giant Bhagavad Gita

The temple holds what it describes as the world's largest printed Bhagavad Gita, unveiled in 2019.

Govinda's and the bookshop

Govinda's is a pure-vegetarian, dine-in restaurant on the premises, good for lunch or dinner after the aarti. The temple also has a shop for books and devotional items.

How to reach ISKCON Delhi by metro

The temple names Nehru Place on the Violet Line as its nearest metro station; its home page also lists Kailash Colony. The address is Hare Krishna Hills, Sant Nagar Main Road, East of Kailash, New Delhi 110065.

By road it is about 5 km from Hazrat Nizamuddin railway station and 12 km from New Delhi station, according to the temple. There is parking on site, and the temple lists wheelchair access and a lift.

✅ Rules and etiquette

  • Shoes off — Footwear is left outside the temple hall.
  • Modest dress — Covered shoulders and knees are the norm for a working temple.
  • Phones away during aarti — The visit card above says no photos inside. The temple's own site is more specific: photography is allowed in the open complex and gardens, but in the main hall keep your phone away during aarti and darshan.
  • Free entry — No ticket and no online booking. Donations are voluntary.

Best time to visit

Aim for Sandhya aarti in the early evening, then stay for kirtan and dinner at Govinda's. If the sanctum is your goal, avoid 1 pm to 4 pm, when the altar doors are closed. For a first visit to a Hare Krishna temple in India, this one is a good introduction: entry is free and you can simply walk in during temple hours.
