Dariba Kalan, Old Delhi's jewellery street

← Delhi

Dariba Kalan is a 17th-century lane in Old Delhi that runs from Chandni Chowk towards Jama Masjid, lined with small jewellery shops. It sells silver (some of it handmade), local gold jewellery, semi-precious stones, beads and pendants, and a lot of costume jewellery. It is where Delhi residents shop, not a luxury market, and prices are made to be bargained down.

A jewelry and gemstone market. Located in Old Delhi, near Chandni Chowk.

What's here:

- Silver (including decent handmade pieces) - Gold (mostly local jewelry) - Semi-precious stones - All sorts of beads, pendants, amulets

It's not a "high-class jewels" market, but rather an authentic place where Delhi residents go for jewelry.

Be prepared for serious haggling: prices can come down 3–4 times from the initial quote.

What Dariba Kalan is

The name goes back to the Persian dur-e be-baha, "the incomparable pearl"; kalan means "big", to set it apart from a smaller lane nearby, Dariba Khurd, now known as Kinari Bazaar. Under Shah Jahan the street was a market for pearls, precious stones, gold and silver. It was here, in March 1739, that the Persian invader Nadir Shah's troops massacred the city's people and looted the gold shops.

The street still sits inside the old walled city of Shahjahanabad, linking Chandni Chowk with Jama Masjid. Bollywood fans may know it from the song Kajra Re in Bunty aur Babli (2005).
