Khalanga War Memorial
An obelisk on a wooded hilltop above Nalapani, five or six kilometres from the centre, that most visitors never hear about. The British raised it after the Battle of Nalapani in 1814, the opening clash of the Anglo-Nepalese War, and inscribed it twice over: to their own general, and to the Gorkha defenders under Balbhadra Kunwar, some 600 of whom held the Khalanga fort for weeks against about 3,000 troops. It is often described as the only war memorial a victorious army ever built for its adversary. The site is ASI-protected and usually silent, apart from the Gorkha community's annual commemorative fair.
Rarely visited, though it may be the only monument a victor raised to its enemy
