Shri Guru Ram Rai Darbar Sahib

← Dehradun

AreaJhanda Mohalla, old city

The city is named for this place: in 1676 Ram Rai, eldest son of the seventh Sikh Guru, pitched his dera (camp) in the Dun valley, and Dera-Dun grew up around it. The darbar holding his tomb was finished between 1697 and 1707 under his wife Mata Punjab Kaur, laid out like a Mughal garden tomb and belonging to the Udasi tradition. Its walls carry one of North India's richest bodies of mural painting: Mughal, Kangra, Rajasthani and Garhwali hands at work from the early 1700s to around 1910. Five days after Holi the Jhanda Mela fills the courtyard as a 27-metre sal flagpole goes up again. Head covered, dress modest, shoes off at the entrance.
