Delhi or Pune: the capital's monuments or a plateau city near Mumbai
Delhi or Pune is a choice between scale and ease. Delhi is the capital with eight historical cities on one plain and the start of most North India routes. Pune is Maharashtra's cultured second city on the Deccan plateau: the wooden Shaniwar Wada, leafy old quarters, a student crowd, forts at its edge, two to three hours from Mumbai. Pune's monsoon is gentle and its winter days warm; the two share their best months in October and February.
Delhi
Eight capitals stacked on one plain, and you can walk between them: a 12th-century victory tower, the Mughal tomb that taught the Taj its shape, colonial New Delhi's avenues, and the spice lanes of Chandni Chowk. Most trips to North India start here. Give it two days and it stops being just an airport.

Pune
Maharashtra's cultured second city blends Maratha history with young student energy: the wooden Shaniwar Wada, leafy old quarters, modern cafés and the Osho ashram. A relaxed, walkable city, with Sahyadri forts and monsoon-green trails at its edge.

Open in India GOA capital or a plateau city: who each suits
Delhi suits travellers who want a capital's range: the Red Fort and Qutb Minar for history, the Tibetan quarter of Majnu Ka Tilla or Connaught Place for an evening walk, and four main railway stations for onward trips. The guide counts eight historical capitals and three UNESCO sites. See the Delhi page.
Pune suits an unhurried, walkable city with history and day trips: Shaniwar Wada, the old quarters, cafés, the Osho ashram, and the Sahyadri forts, Sinhagad among them, reached by scooter or car. Its food list in the guide includes misal pav, a fiery sprouted-bean curry, and Mango Mastani, a Pune invention: a mango milkshake thick enough to need a spoon.
Seasons
Delhi's temperature range is wider than Pune's: January nights fall to about 8°C, and May days average 40°C, with heatwaves above 45°C in May and June, the months to avoid. Its best months are October, February and March; from November to January smog can push the AQI past 450 and fog delays trains and flights.
Pune is best from October to February and avoids only May, when highs reach 37–38°C. Its monsoon is moderate, about 140–190 mm a month from June to September, and the hills around the city turn green. January nights drop to about 11°C, January days reach about 30°C.
Both in one trip: October and February are best in both cities. The guide's smog and fog warnings for December and January apply to Delhi, not Pune.
Getting between Delhi and Pune
The guide lists no direct train or bus for this pair. Two options follow from what it does list. Fly: DEL handles domestic flights everywhere, and Pune Airport (PNQ) at Lohegaon, mostly domestic, is 10 km from the centre (cab ~₹200–500, 30–45 minutes). Or go via Mumbai: the Rajdhani runs Delhi to Mumbai Central in about 16 hours, and from Mumbai the Vande Bharat reaches Pune in about 2 h 20 min (~₹580–900) or the Deccan Queen and other day expresses in 3–3.5 hours (~₹90–290).
Fares are approximate, checked in August 2026. Delhi's airport (DEL) is 16 km from the centre; if you travel light, DTC city buses to it cost ~₹50–100.
Getting around and what it costs
Fares are approximate, checked in August 2026.
Delhi
Delhi as a whole is not walkable: pavements double as parking, so crossing the city means the metro (~₹11–64 a ride) or an auto booked in an app (from ~₹30 plus ~₹11 a km). The guide advises visitors against renting a scooter here.
Pune
Pune Metro has two lines (~₹10–35) that beat the traffic where they reach, though the network does not cover the whole city yet. The meter is weak here, so autos are best booked in an app (from ~₹25 plus ~₹17 a km). Cabs across the centre from ~₹150. Scooter rental ~₹300–500 a day makes sense for the forts.
Languages
Delhi: Hindi, English, Punjabi and Urdu. Pune: Marathi, Hindi and English.
