Bangalore or Pune: two plateau cities with different neighbours
Bangalore vs Pune is a comparison of two plateau cities that are easy on visitors. Pune is Maharashtra's cultured second city: Maratha history, the wooden Shaniwar Wada, student energy and Sahyadri forts at its edge, two to three hours from Mumbai. Bengaluru (Bangalore) is the bigger city, with a narrower temperature range, and the gateway to the south. Neither has a heavy monsoon (the wettest month brings about 190 mm in Pune and 208 mm in Bengaluru), so the choice is about what is nearby.
Bengaluru
India's tech capital keeps its older selves in plain sight: a rock-cut cave temple under a hill, a palace modelled on Windsor Castle, and the market lanes of Malleswaram and Gandhi Bazaar. Filter coffee and dosa at dawn, craft beer and bookshops after dark, and a plateau climate that stays mild all year.
📅 Best time: Nov–Feb
Pune
Maharashtra's cultured second city blends Maratha history with young student energy: the wooden Shaniwar Wada, leafy old quarters, modern cafés and the Osho ashram. A relaxed, walkable city, with Sahyadri forts and monsoon-green trails at its edge.

Open in India GOMaratha forts or the road south: who each city suits
Pune suits a trip with Maratha history and day trips out of town: Shaniwar Wada, leafy old quarters, cafés, the Osho ashram, and the forts of the Sahyadri, Sinhagad among them, with monsoon-green trails around the edge. It pairs naturally with Mumbai: the Vande Bharat takes about 2 h 20 min, and the old Deccan Queen, slower, still has its dining car and climbs the Western Ghats in daylight.
Bengaluru suits a trip that continues south. By train Mysuru is about two hours away (from ~₹80) and Chennai about 4.5 hours by Vande Bharat (~₹840, fares approximate, August 2026); overnight sleeper buses run to Goa and Hampi. In the city itself: a palace modelled on Windsor Castle, the market lanes of Malleswaram, craft beer and bookshops after dark. See the Bengaluru page.
Seasons on two plateaus
Pune's best months run from October to February. May is its one month to avoid, with an average high of 37°C (April reaches 38°C). From June to September it gets about 140–190 mm a month and the hills turn green. In January nights fall to about 11°C.
Bengaluru's range is narrower: average highs of 27–34°C, January lows of about 16°C, and no month to avoid. It is driest from November to February; September and October are the wettest, at about 208 and 186 mm.
Both in one trip: November to February is the overlap. In May Bengaluru (33°C average high) has no avoid label, while Pune (37°C) does.
Getting between Bengaluru and Pune
The guide has no train listed for this pair. Long-distance sleeper buses arrive in Pune from Bengaluru, but the guide gives no times or fares for them. Flying is the other option: Kempegowda International (BLR) has direct flights from all major Indian cities, and Pune Airport (PNQ) at Lohegaon handles mostly domestic flights, ten kilometres from the centre (cab ~₹200–500, 30–45 minutes).
Arriving from abroad, Pune is usually reached via Mumbai and the train, while Bengaluru's BLR takes direct flights from Europe and the Gulf. BLR sits 40 km north of the city; the Vayu Vajra KIA-8 leaves Majestic every 15–30 minutes and takes card or UPI on board (airport buses ~₹150–380, 1–2 hours). Fares on this page are approximate, checked in August 2026.

Pune
Two metro lines at ~₹10–35, young and not yet everywhere. Autos prefer to name a price, so book through an app (from ~₹25 plus ~₹17 a km). Cabs across the centre from ~₹150; distances are bigger than they look, and the old city to Hinjewadi is an hour or more.
Bengaluru
Metro QR tickets come from the app or straight through WhatsApp, ~₹10–90 a ride. Cabs across the centre start at ~₹150, but in rush hour the metro still wins on the same route. Autos booked through Namma Yatri start at ~₹36 for 2 km.
Languages
Pune's languages in the guide are Marathi, Hindi and English. Bengaluru's are Kannada, English, Tamil, Telugu and Hindi.
