Bangalore or Mumbai: a mild plateau or the sea at full volume

Mumbai vs Bangalore is mostly a question of the monsoon and of tempo. Mumbai is modern India at full volume: Art Deco seafronts, colonial Gothic, Bollywood and street food on every corner. Bengaluru (Bangalore) sits on a plateau at about 900 m, where the climate stays mild all year. From November to February both are in season; from June to September only Bengaluru is.

Bengaluru

India's tech capital keeps its older selves in plain sight: a rock-cut cave temple under a hill, a palace modelled on Windsor Castle, and the market lanes of Malleswaram and Gandhi Bazaar. Filter coffee and dosa at dawn, craft beer and bookshops after dark, and a plateau climate that stays mild all year.

The sea or the plateau: who each city suits

Mumbai suits a trip about the city itself: sunset promenades on Marine Drive, the Gateway of India, island temples, markets that never sleep and the film industry that makes 650+ Hindi films a year. Elephanta is a separate boat from the Gateway, ~₹260 return (approximate, August 2026), and the caves are closed on Mondays.

Bengaluru suits a trip at a lower volume. The guide counts 15,000+ startups and 55 unicorns here, but what visitors come for is older: a palace modelled on Windsor Castle, the market lanes of Malleswaram, and filter coffee, which in Bengaluru is a household ritual with a fixed hour. In the evening it is craft beer and bookshops. See the Bengaluru page.

Seasons: the monsoon decides

Both cities are at their best from November to February. After that they part ways. Mumbai's monsoon months, June to September, are marked to avoid: around 2,200 mm falls in a season, July alone brings about 920 mm over 23 rainy days, and red alerts disrupt trains and flights. May is also on the avoid list there.

Bengaluru has no month to avoid. In July it gets about 116 mm against Mumbai's 920, and its highest monthly average is 34°C, in April. Its wettest stretch is September and October, with heavy showers and local flooding.

If your dates fall in June–September, Bengaluru is the one of the two without an avoid label.

Getting between Bengaluru and Mumbai

The guide lists no train or bus for this pair, so plan on a flight: Bengaluru's Kempegowda International (BLR) has direct flights from all major Indian cities. Check rail options on IRCTC if you prefer the train.

Mumbai now has two airports about an hour apart by road, so check whether your ticket says BOM or NMI. BOM is in Santacruz, and its T1 and T2 stand about 5 km apart; from T2 the Aqua Line metro runs to BKC and the southern tip for ~₹10–80. Navi Mumbai (NMI) is about 40 km from South Mumbai across the Atal Setu bridge, ~₹1,200–1,800 by taxi. Bengaluru's BLR is 40 km north of the city; its Terminal 2, a bamboo-lattice hall with hanging gardens, handles all international flights and part of the domestic ones, so check the terminal on your boarding pass. Fares above are approximate, checked in August 2026.

Getting around and what it costs

Fares are approximate, checked in August 2026.

Mumbai

Local trains from ~₹5 on three lines, every two to five minutes, and the fastest thing in the city outside the peaks (8:00–11:00 and 17:30–21:00). The black-and-yellow cabs run the meter, from ~₹31. Autos are barred south of Bandra and Sion, so in Colaba or Fort you will not find one.

Bengaluru

Namma Metro's Purple Line runs from Whitefield to Challaghatta through MG Road and Majestic, the Green Line crosses it north to south, and the Yellow Line reaches Electronic City, at ~₹10–90 a ride. BMTC buses start at ~₹6 (AC Vajra from ~₹10); the Tummoc and BMTC apps show routes live.

Languages

Mumbai's list in the guide is Marathi, Hindi, English, Urdu and Gujarati. In Bengaluru Kannada comes first, then English, Tamil, Telugu and Hindi.
