Bike rental in Chandigarh

← Chandigarh

Chandigarh is one of the few Indian cities where a bicycle is real transport: it has a network of separated cycle tracks and a public bike-sharing scheme, Smart Bike, run through an app. Scooters and motorbikes are rented from private operators; we have not verified any of them, so this page covers what to check before you hand over a deposit, the documents you need, and when a bus or a cab is the better choice.

Bicycle and Smart Bike

A rare Indian city with a proper network of separated cycle tracks, plus the Smart Bike sharing scheme with docks and an app. Here a bicycle is transport, not a sport.

"SCO 151, Sector 28" is read literally: the sector number tells the driver where to go, and Le Corbusier's grid means you can find the rest yourself.

Buses to Manali, Shimla and Dharamshala leave from the Sector 43 terminal, not Sector 17, a useful thing to know before booking a taxi to the wrong one.

🌙 CTU buses stop around 22:00 and there is no night service of any kind, so plan late evenings around a cab.

Bicycles and Smart Bike

The city has a network of separated cycle tracks, and along Sukhna Lake there is about 5 km of walking and cycling path. Leisure Valley, the park strip that runs about 8 km through the city, is the other easy ride.

Smart Bike is the city's public bike-sharing scheme: docking stations around the city, cycles unlocked by scanning a QR code with the app, and payment from an in-app wallet. The Tribune reported a fare of about ₹10 an hour. Since Chandigarh Smart City Limited closed, the Municipal Corporation oversees it and a private operator still runs it; and the same report describes damaged cycles and docks and missing bicycles, so check the brakes, chain and seat before you ride away.

Official rules

These come from Indian law and the UK government's travel advice (FCDO), not from rental companies.

  • Rental needs a licence — Under the Rent a Motor Cycle Scheme, 1997, issued under the Motor Vehicles Act, no one may run a self-drive motorcycle rental business without a licence from the State Transport Authority.
  • Helmet is the law — The Motor Vehicles Act (section 129) requires everyone above four years of age riding or carried on a motorcycle in a public place to wear a helmet; Sikhs wearing a turban are exempt. FCDO also advises a helmet and proper footwear.
  • Your licence — FCDO says UK visitors need the 1949 International Driving Permit together with their UK licence, and should get it before travelling, as it cannot be bought outside the UK; how long a UK licence may be used varies from state to state. Visitors from other countries should check with their own licensing authority.

Rental conditions: what to check with the operator

Deposit, the documents an operator asks for and the rules for damage are the company's own terms, not law, and they differ. We have not verified any operator in Chandigarh, so before paying check the following.

  • The operator's paperwork — Ask whether the operator is licensed under the scheme and see the registration and insurance papers for the vehicle you are taking.
  • The vehicle itself — Photograph scratches before you leave and test the brakes, lights and horn.
  • Terms in writing — Ask for the deposit amount, what happens if the vehicle is damaged or breaks down, and the return time, and keep a receipt.

Road safety

India has a high death rate from road accidents. FCDO advises avoiding driving at night and in fog, when visibility is low; around Chandigarh, fog is a December–January hazard. FCDO also warns that livestock on the road are a hazard in both city and countryside. Emergency numbers: 112 for all services. More in is India safe and emergency numbers.

When a bus or a cab is easier

If the plan is the road into Himachal, there is also the bus: buses to Manali, Shimla and Dharamshala leave from the Sector 43 terminal, not Sector 17. Inside the city, CTU buses run from about 06:00 to 22:00 and Uber, Ola and Rapido work after that. More in getting around Chandigarh.
