Auroville's four seasons

The figures are long-term averages from the India Meteorological Department station at Puducherry, the nearest official station.

December to March: the best time

Daytime highs of 30–31 °C in December to February and nights around 21 °C, with very little rain from January to March (under 20 mm a month). December itself can still be wet as the monsoon tails off: it averages 248 mm. Auroville calls mid-December to mid-March the most comfortable season, and guest houses are usually fully booked well ahead from December to February. Details for December.

April to June: the heat

Highs climb from 34 °C in April to 37 °C in May and June, and nights stay at 26–27 °C. Auroville notes that temperatures sometimes reach 40 °C or more in May and June. Rain is light. Plan cycling and outdoor visits for early morning. Details for May and June.

July to September: hot, with showers

This coast lies in the rain shadow of the southwest monsoon, so while much of India is soaked, Auroville gets moderate rain: 74 mm in July, rising to about 135 mm in August and September, on 5–7 days a month. Highs ease to 34–36 °C. Details for July and August.

October to December: the northeast monsoon

The main rains. October averages 260 mm, November 347 mm over 11 days, the wettest month, and humidity reaches about 80%. November is also the cyclone window on this coast: Cyclone Fengal, for one, made landfall near Puducherry at the end of November. Temperatures drop to highs of about 30 °C.

How the weather changes a visit

Rain and the Matrimandir. Rain cancels the day's visitor sessions in the Matrimandir Inner Chamber, so in October to December keep a spare morning if a booked concentration matters to you. More on visiting the Matrimandir.

Mud and dark lanes. The lanes inside Auroville are red dirt: they turn to mud after the October–December rains and have no street lighting once it gets dark. On a bicycle, carry a torch and leave margin to get back before dusk. See getting around by bike.

Booking. The pleasant months are also the busy ones. Guest houses are usually full well in advance from December to February, so book early; March to November is the off season, when a few days ahead is often enough. See where to stay.

Annual total. The IMD Puducherry averages add up to about 1,400 mm a year, most of it in the last three months.

What to pack for Auroville's climate

  • Cotton clothes in light colours: they are cooler than synthetics and dark fabrics.
  • A raincoat, cape or poncho, or at least an umbrella, from October to December.
  • Mosquito repellent, especially for the early morning and after about 5:30 pm.
  • A light jacket or long sleeves for winter evenings and early mornings.
  • Modest clothing: Auroville asks visitors to dress modestly, and recommends one-piece swimsuits at the beach.
