Figures are long-term monthly averages for the Ajmer weather station, at 486 m above sea level. The year brings only about 570 mm of rain, and close to four-fifths of it falls from July to September.
Winter, November to February: the comfortable season
Dry and sunny, with days of 24–30 °C. Nights are the surprise: in December and January they drop to about 10–11 °C, so evenings at the Dargah or by Ana Sagar call for a warm layer. Rain is close to zero.
Summer, March to June: rising heat
March already reaches 32 °C, April 38 °C, and May and June average 39–40 °C by day with nights around 28 °C. Humidity sinks to 22–29% in March–May. Rajasthan Tourism advises avoiding March to May, when temperatures can easily cross 40 °C.
Monsoon, July to September: short and humid
July and August bring about 180 mm each over nine rainy days, with humidity at 66–72% and highs dropping to 32–34 °C. September is drier, at 87 mm over four days.
October: the turn
Still warm by day at about 34 °C, but nearly dry (16 mm) and with nights falling to 21 °C. By November the days settle at around 30 °C.
How the weather and the calendar change a visit
Heat and the bazaars. On Nala Bazar most shops shut for a long lunch break through the worst of the afternoon heat, so shop there in the morning or after five.
Heat and the hills. Taragarh Fort has almost no shade on top, and the Nag Pahar ridge trail has neither shade nor water; it is comfortable only from October to March. Go early or late. More on Taragarh Fort.
The Urs moves through the seasons. The Urs of Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti runs from the 1st to the 6th of Rajab in the Islamic calendar, so its Gregorian date shifts about eleven days earlier each year and depends on the moon sighting. Next: 11–16 December 2026 (expected). The Dargah Committee speaks of lakhs (hundreds of thousands) of pilgrims, and rooms near the shrine go months ahead. In any season, Thursdays and especially Fridays are the busiest days at the Dargah.
Monsoon days. With about nine rainy days a month in July and August, keep indoor stops in reserve: the Dargah, the Jain temple of Soniji ki Nasiyan, the Government Museum.
What to pack for Ajmer's climate
Clothing for the Dargah and the temples matters as much as the weather: shoes come off at the Dargah and at Soniji ki Nasiyan.
- A warm layer from December to February — Nights of 10–14 °C feel cold after a 25 °C day.
- Sun cover from March to June — A hat, sunscreen and water: the forts and ridges have little or no shade.
- An umbrella in July and August — Each month has about nine rainy days.
- Easy-off shoes — For the Dargah, where shoes and bags are left at the cloakrooms by the entrances and heads are covered inside, and for the Jain temple.
