How to get around Ajmer

← Ajmer

Ajmer is a walking town at its centre: the Dargah is a fifteen-minute walk from the railway station, and the lanes around the shrine take nothing on wheels. For everything else there are autos and e-rickshaws with no meters, so the fare is agreed before you get in. Taxis are for the airport, the hills and Pushkar; at Kishangarh airport there are almost no app cars.

From the station to Dargah Sharif

One and a half to two kilometres, about fifteen minutes through Dargah Bazaar, and the walk is half the point. The inner lanes by the shrine take nothing on wheels at all.

Auto and e-rickshaws

The city transport, with no meters anywhere; agree the fare first. Useful with luggage, in the heat, and for Ana Sagar and the Jain temple on the far side of town.

~₹50–100 from the station to the dargah

Cycle rickshaws

Still working the station and the bazaar for the same money as an auto: slower, but they thread through the market crowd better.

~₹50–100

Around the dargah, insistent "guides" and collections for the chadar: any donation here is voluntary and its size is yours to set.

Taxis: airport, hills and day trips

From Kishangarh airport (KQH). The airport is about 30 km from the city, according to Rajasthan Tourism, and there are almost no app cars there. Rajasthan Tourism suggests pre-booking a cab or taking one from the taxi stand outside the terminal; the drive takes about 40 minutes. Expect roughly ₹1,500 for a sedan and ₹2,000 for an SUV.

From Jaipur. Jaipur airport is the bigger gateway, about 130 km away; a taxi costs roughly ₹2,500–3,500 and takes two and a half to three hours.

Up to Taragarh Fort. About twenty minutes by taxi or auto up the winding road from the old city. There is no fixed fare: agree it first, and agree whether the driver waits.

Booking a car. Many hotels arrange transfers, and for a late arrival a car sent by the hotel is the simplest option. The UK Foreign Office (FCDO) advises against travelling alone and hailing taxis on the street, especially at night, and suggests using taxis that have seatbelts.

The local bus to Pushkar

The most-used route out of Ajmer is the cheapest one.

  1. Where

From the main bus stand, every 15–30 minutes; some runs pick up near the railway station, which saves crossing town. The main bus stand also has a cloakroom.

  2. How much and how long

About ₹25–35, bought on board, for 30–40 minutes over the Nag Pahar pass.

  3. Ignore the ₹400 fare

Booking apps show that price for long-distance coaches passing through. The local bus is ten times cheaper. More on Pushkar.

Good to know

A few habits of the town save money and a late-night headache.

  • No night transport — After about ten in the evening rickshaws thin out and buses stop. On a late train, have a car arranged through the hotel before you arrive.
  • Autos for the far side of town — Walk the old city, but take an auto with luggage, in the heat, and for Ana Sagar and the Jain temple on the other side of town.
  • Languages — Hindi, Rajasthani, Urdu and English are spoken in Ajmer; with drivers, a translation app can help.
  • Seatbelts and crowds — FCDO notes that seatbelts are not common in autos or the back seats of taxis, and advises care with belongings on buses, trains and in crowds: keep valuables close in the Dargah bazaar.
  • Safety and emergencies — The all-India emergency number is 112 and the tourist helpline is 1363. See is India safe, emergency numbers and safety in Ajmer.
