The Government Museum on Kasturba Road, founded in 1865, is one of the oldest museums in India, but it is not open to visitors at the moment. The Karnataka Department of Archaeology, Museums and Heritage states that access to the museum has been temporarily restricted while the building is restored. The neighbouring Venkatappa Art Gallery has reopened after its own renovation.

AreaKasturba Road

A red neoclassical block on Kasturba Road, in the museum quarter beside Cubbon Park, holding the kind of collection that gets assembled slowly: sculpture, coins, jewellery and inscribed stone. It was founded in 1865, among the oldest museums in India, and moved into this building in 1877. The piece to look for is the Halmidi inscription of around 450 CE, the earliest known writing in Kannada. Venkatappa Art Gallery shares the site, which is how a short visit turns into an afternoon.

Is the Government Museum open?

No, not at present. The Karnataka Department of Archaeology, Museums and Heritage, which runs the museum, carries a notice that the Government Museum at Kasturba Road "has been temporarily restricted in the interest of the public".

The closure began with a restoration announced at the end of 2023, first expected to take about a year. The neighbouring Venkatappa Art Gallery reopened in June 2025, but the museum itself stayed shut. As of October 2026 the official notice is still up and no reopening date has been published. Because of this, the visit card on this page shows no hours or tickets.

A museum from 1865

The museum was established on 18 August 1865, when L. B. Bowring was Chief Commissioner of Mysore, with guidance from Surgeon Edward Balfour, founder of the Madras museum. In 1877 it moved from a cantonment jail building into the present red neoclassical block designed by Colonel Richard Hieram Sankey, Chief Engineer of Mysore State: two porticos, Corinthian columns, round arches and a prominent sloping parapet. It is administered by the state archaeology department and stands in the museum quarter beside Cubbon Park.

What the collection holds

Before the closure the museum had 18 galleries on two floors. The restoration plan is to show around 9,000 objects in 22 categories, more than double the roughly 4,000 previously on display.

Halmidi inscription

Wikipedia names this stone of around 450 CE, the earliest known Kannada inscription, as the museum's key holding; its own article on the inscription says the original is kept by the archaeology directorate in Mysuru, so what was on show may be a replica.

Sculpture

Hoysala and Gandhara sculpture among the stone pieces.

Prehistory

Neolithic pottery and relics going back about 5,000 years.

Coins, jewellery, manuscripts

Before the closure the collection included old jewellery and coins; coins, copper plates, manuscripts, arms and armour and miniature paintings are among the categories planned for the new display.

What you can visit on Kasturba Road

The museum shares its site with the Venkatappa Art Gallery, which reopened in June 2025 after a renovation of about 15 months. The Visvesvaraya Industrial and Technological Museum is also on Kasturba Road, and Cubbon Park is alongside, so the street still makes a half day even with the Government Museum shut.
